6 Key Standards for Keeping Your Salon and Workstation Sanitized

As a lash artist or salon professional, maintaining proper sanitation is critical for ensuring client safety, complying with state regulations, and maintaining the trust and credibility of your business. A clean, sanitary workspace isn’t just about appearances—it’s about protecting the health of your clients and yourself while staying compliant with local laws. Here are six essential standards to help you keep your salon and workstation sanitized and professional.

1. Wash Your Hands Thoroughly

Handwashing is one of the most important steps in preventing the spread of germs and bacteria in your salon. Make it a habit to wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before and after working with each client. Don’t forget to clean under your nails and around your wrists, as these areas can harbor bacteria. If soap and water are unavailable, use a hand sanitizer with at least 90% alcohol, but always prioritize handwashing whenever possible. Clean hands set the tone for the rest of your sanitation routine.

2. Disinfect Tools After Every Client

Reusable tools, such as tweezers, lash scissors, and reusable lash palettes, should be disinfected after each client to eliminate harmful bacteria and viruses. This is where the choice of disinfectant becomes incredibly important.

My personal favorite disinfectant is CaviCide, and here’s why:

  • It’s clear, which means it won’t stain or discolor my cute, high-quality tweezers like other disinfectants, such as Barbicide, which can leave a greenish-blue tint over time.

  • CaviCide has a quicker kill time than Barbicide, which means I can disinfect tools more efficiently without compromising cleanliness.

  • It’s versatile and can be diluted properly, following the manufacturer’s directions, to use in a spray bottle for surface disinfection. This makes it an excellent all-in-one solution for tools and workstations.

To disinfect your tools with CaviCide or another high-level disinfectant:

  • Wash tools with soap and water first to remove any residue.

  • Fully submerge the tools in the disinfectant for the recommended contact time (per manufacturer instructions).

  • Rinse tools thoroughly with water and dry them before storing them in a clean, closed container.

By following this process, you’ll ensure your tools are sanitized and ready for safe use.

3. Replace Single-Use Items

Single-use items, such as mascara wands, eye pads, tape, cotton swabs, and applicators, must never be reused—even for the same client. These items are designed to be disposed of after a single use to prevent cross-contamination. Always keep a stock of disposable items on hand, and immediately discard used ones in a covered trash bin to maintain a hygienic workspace.

4. Clean and Disinfect Surfaces

It’s not just your tools that need attention—surfaces in your salon should also be disinfected between clients. This includes your workstation, lash bed, client chair, and trays. High-touch areas, such as doorknobs, light switches, and handles, should also be wiped down regularly throughout the day.

I love using CaviCide for surface disinfection as well. By properly diluting it, you can pour it into a spray bottle and easily disinfect surfaces. Spray down your workstation, lash bed, and surrounding areas, let the solution sit for the recommended contact time, and then wipe with a clean, lint-free cloth. This keeps your workspace safe and compliant with sanitation standards.

5. Maintain Proper Ventilation

Good ventilation is often overlooked but is crucial for maintaining a safe and sanitary salon environment. Lash adhesives and other products can release fumes, which can irritate both you and your clients over time. A well-ventilated space helps reduce airborne contaminants and prevents the buildup of fumes. Consider using an air purifier with a HEPA filter to further enhance air quality and ensure your salon remains a healthy space for everyone.

6. Store Tools and Products Properly

Once your tools are sanitized and disinfected, they should be stored in a clean, closed container to prevent contamination. Leaving disinfected tools exposed on your workstation can allow airborne particles and bacteria to settle on them, undoing all your hard work.

Additionally, keep your lash products, like adhesives, lash trays, and cleansers, in their original containers and away from direct sunlight or heat. Proper storage preserves their quality and ensures they’re safe to use on clients.

Why Sanitation Matters

For lash artists, sanitation isn’t just about following the rules—it’s about protecting your clients, safeguarding your business, and elevating your professionalism. Using the right disinfectants, like CaviCide, and adhering to proper cleaning protocols ensures your clients feel safe and cared for every time they visit.

By implementing these six sanitation standards—washing hands, disinfecting tools, replacing single-use items, cleaning surfaces, ensuring ventilation, and storing tools properly—you can maintain a hygienic and professional environment that your clients will trust and appreciate.

A clean salon isn’t just good practice—it’s the foundation of a successful and reputable business!
